Are You Ready To Start A Capsule Wardrobe?

Follow These 5 Simple Steps

If you are like me and have never built a capsule wardrobe before, you might feel a bit overwhelmed by the whole concept.

Lucky for us, Leanne from Classy Yet Trendy has invented a simple step-by-step guide for putting together a capsule wardrobe in five simple steps.

First, declutter your wardrobe:

Start with a bit of Marie-Kondoing and take everything you have out of your closet to start with.

And this is EVERYTHING you have!

Set it aside, so your closet is completely empty. You have now created space in your wardrobe for your new capsule wardrobe outfits, and you are ready to build your wardrobe capsule.

Step 1: Select your base color: Choose “Navy” or “Black” as your base color.

This step will come to you quite naturally, as you probably gravitate either towards navy or black and have these colors in your closet already. Choosing the right color also has to do with what suits you best, determined by your seasonal color type.

Here is my Simple Guide To Seasonal Color Analysis if you are not sure about which color to choose. This will help you determine which colors are good for you (includes color charts for each type).

You will select mainly bottoms, dresses, and layers (Step 4) in this base color.

Step 2: Select Neutral-basic Essentials: capsule wardrobe outfits

Select a few neutral-colored core essentials in white, ivory, tan, beige, camel, and/or grey.

Ever heard of “neutral-basic Essentials” before? I hadn´t.

Let me explain what it is: “neutral-basic essentials” are plain t-shirts or button-down shirts in the colors white, ivory, tan, beige, camel, and/or grey.

You will select a couple of these in the process.

If you are going for a fundamental, minimalistic wardrobe of capsule outfits, you will go straight to Step 5 after this step and complete your capsule wardrobe.

IF you like a bit of color, go to Step 3.

Step 3: Choose Your Accent Color (optional):

I love color and cannot imagine my wardrobe without color. You choose one, two, or three accent colors that you like and add a few clothes to your capsule with your accent colors.

Step 4: Add A Few Patterned Items and Layers:capsule wardrobe outfits

Add 1 or 2 patterned clothes (strips, floral, plaid, etc.) and add a few layering items if weather-permitting (jackets, blazer, cardigan, coat, etc.)

The easiest and most popular pattern would be stripes. I am a fan myself and will definitely add a striped Breton shirt to my capsule outfits.

Please be mindful that the colors in the floral match your accent and base color with floral patterns. In terms of layers, consider the climate you will be using your capsule wardrobe outfits for. You would add a trench coat for milder weather and a thick duffle coat for a colder climate.

Step 5: Add Shoes and Accessories:

Add a few shoes in neutral colors and/or your accent colors, then choose your accessories, like bags, jewelry & scarves to complete your capsule wardrobe outfits.

Apart from choosing items that fit you well, color is the most crucial factor when it comes to your capsule wardrobe outfits.

Choose the colors that best match your skin tone and that you usually gravitate towards. Adjust your capsule wardrobe to where you live, so if you live in a colder climate, don’t forget to add accessories such as heavy scarves and hats, and gloves.

  1. Hello, thank you for this information and for the step in selecting which color to choose first because that was what I needed to know. I can see how it makes things a lot easier when choosing the colors that suit you beforehand. I am not a mom yet but I can feel how stressful it is to dress up for work especially when you don’t prepare your work clothes the previous night. A capsule wardrobe is definitely an option because it will make thing easy for me

    • Hi, thank you for your comment! I  I am happy you enjoyed the bit about choosing your colors. I really love wearing quite a bit of color in my outfits; they brighten your mood and day.  If you are interested in learning more about seasonal color types and how to find the best colors for your skin tone, I  recommend reading my post about finding the right colors for your skin tone. I have also explored the topic of capsule wardrobes a bit further and created a step-by-step guide on how to build a business capsule wardrobe. Here is the link to that, if you are interested in building your own. All the best, Drea

    • Hi Cheryl, thank you so much for taking the time to comment on my post. I am so happy you enjoyed the article! The capsule wardrobe concept is brilliant for office wear, but of course, it can equally be used for a “non-office” lifestyle :). It is great to get your feedback; thanks again. All the best, Drea.

  2. The information you have shared is excellent. It is indeed challenging to deal with your work duties, be on time, etc., when you still have to take care of your kids and prepare them for school. When you have to get the kids ready to go and yourself with a work-appropriate outfit, it can be very stressful and a struggle. I like the capsule wardrobe outfits and can see how they could make my life a lot easier in the mornings. Thank you for sharing.

    • Hello Jamie, I can relate to what you are saying: mornings with kids can be so hectic. I feel that a streamlined and easy office wardrobe can help you a great deal in making your mornings run a bit smoother. With capsule wardrobe outfits, you only have a limited number of items to choose from, which helps you always have something to wear and never run out of outfit ideas. All the items in your closet will be well-coordinated and match. It takes a little bit of time to set up a capsule wardrobe at first, but once you are done, you are going to love it! I am happy that you like the idea of a capsule wardrobe. All the best, Drea

  3. I like the idea of capsule wardrobe outfits, and the idea that there should be no more than 50 items with shoes in the closet is really okay; maintaining too many clothes is just a waste of time and hard to handle. A suit crumples quickly and needs to be ironed often. This idea is smart and good for every household; all your clothes will always be nicely packed and stored with capsules, so we know what and when to wear them.
Compliments on choosing your blog’s theme on your website. I really like it. I wish you a lot of success in your further work.

    • Hello Dragan, thank you very much for your comment. I am glad you like the idea of capsule wardrobe outfits. As you have said in your comment, a capsule wardrobe streamlines your wardrobe choices really nicely and will help you save time and energy for other things. You still have to do the folding and organizing of your clothes, but it sure makes it easier to manage a limited number of items in your closet. A capsule wardrobe initially takes a bit of planning, but once you have put it together, everything in your closet will mix and match nicely. You will never have to think about your outfits again until it is time to build your next capsule – for a new season, for example. I highly recommend trying the concept; it can really help you in your day-to-day life. All the best, and thank you for your comment, Drea

  4. Thank you for this article. Much more than ever, my wife needs a capsule wardrobe. I waste a lot of time in the morning waiting for her. She is either not seeing the outfit she planned on wearing or not been able to makeup what she wants to wear. I have fowarded this article to her and I believe we will be able to use your principle of making up 78 out of a capsule wardrobe of 55

    • Hello Parameter, your comment made me giggle. I  have always thought of how much time women can save by having a streamlined business wardrobe with limited selected items, but I have never thought about how much time men could potentially save :)! This made me laugh, I  am just picturing you waiting for your wife outside a closet full of clothes with nothing to wear. It can be frustrating. Having said that, do women really spend more time getting ready? A study by “YouGov” suggests that they spend slightly more time, but this is mainly because women put on makeup every day, and hairstyling also takes up a bit more time. So I believe it is partly a myth that women always take longer to get dressed. Anyway, I  am glad my post about capsule wardrobe outfits will help your family life. It is quite easy to put together a capsule wardrobe, here is a step-by-step guide, if your wife is interested in doing that. All the best to you and your family, Drea
