For a working mom, comfortable office clothes are a must-have to juggle everyday demands at work and home. Here are 5 basic tips on how to build a comfortable office clothes wardrobe.
If you are a mom that works in an office, you know how stressful it can be to get out of the door in the morning and get to work on time, and you also know that your day is far from over when you leave work – the rest of the day will be dedicated to your kids – from going to the playground, soccer training, dance class, and grocery shopping.
Your day, as a mom starts after your day at the office, has finished.
This is challenging at the best of times and downright stressful most of the time. The last thing you want to fret about is your wardrobe’s choice for the day – you do not have the time and energy.
In this article, I want to help you take the hassle out of your business wardrobe with these 5 tips on putting together a wardrobe of comfortable office clothes.
Tip # 1: Know your business dress style and stick to it
First and foremost, it is important to know the business dress style that is deemed appropriate at your office.
These can differ between different roles and industries: The most common business dress styles are the business professional, business casual, and smart casual dress styles.
I want to help you take the hassle out of business clothing, and for that purpose, I find business casual to be the best style to go from boardroom to playground. So if at all possible at your office, I recommend sticking to this style as much as possible.

Tip # 2: Find Your Color Type And Choose Clothes Accordingly
Years back, I had my color type defined during training for professional speaking. I have found that this has helped me a lot in creating a simple and hassle-free wardrobe.
If you are not familiar with color types, there are 4 types: the 2 “cold” color types ´winter` and ´summer´ and the warm color types ´autumn´ and ´spring.´
The color type is determined by a person´s skin undertone and hair color. Each of the types is then associated with a color palette that perfectly suits this person´s natural tones.
If you are unsure what your color type is, you can have it determined by a professional color stylist or watch this space for a more detailed guide about finding your color type.

Tip #3: Comfortable Office Clothes – Comfy And Easy-To-Maintain Materials
Here is a confession: I hate ironing and avoid ironing at all cost. I am probably not alone with this aversion:).
So to maintain a comfortable, hassle-free business wardrobe, I look for comfortable, iron-free materials.
I have had the best experience with jersey, silk, and Ponte fabric. All of these are so easy to maintain, emerge from the washing machine almost wrinkle-free, and are comfortable and versatile enough to go from boardroom to playground in style.
Tip # 4: Comfortable Office Clothes – Comfy And Versatile Cuts And Styles
If you are a mom that works in an office, you know the challenge of looking polished for a business presentation but still being in this same outfit when you hit the soccer field after work: Tight skirts, very high heels get in the way of your everyday life.
Therefore, I recommend sticking to comfortable and versatile cuts and styles: having said that, my all-time favorite and wardrobe staple is the classic pantsuit.
I really recommend investing in a couple of well-cut, fitted pantsuits. With the jacket on and paired with heels, they are perfect for the office. You can lose the heels and jacket after work and be perfectly comfortable during your after-work activities with the kids.
When it comes to shoes, I recommend going for low-heeled pumps, sling-backs, or mules. Personally, I also feel sneakers are a great option; this will depend on the dress style common in your office, though – see above.
Choosing the right bag is a whole topic in itself, but simply said I would recommend a bag big enough to fit letter-sized documents and a laptop, but with extra pockets for water bottles, etc., which you might need after work.
Tip # 5: Minimize your business wardrobe and organize it well
As a working mom, you don´t have much time to think about your wardrobe in the morning. You have tons of other things to think about like school snacks, homework done, last-minute projects, getting to school on time, etc.
So I recommend adopting what I call ´office uniform´ that is simple and includes high-quality key pieces. I mean that you have some good quality pantsuits, some nice shirts, and matching shoes. All the items should be from the same color family and made from comfortable and iron-free materials. If you add 1-2 dresses or skirts to your wardrobe and 2 coats (1 for spring/summer, 1 for autumn/winter), then you are good to go without too much hassle :).
I should mention, that the capsule wardrobe concept is PERFECT for working moms. To help you find out more, here a couple of links about how to build a simple, yet functional business wardrobe.

Great tips. I absolutely hate ironing, so I don’t. Like you when buying my clothes the first thing I check is the material to make sure it won’t need ironing. I work from home so I don’t have the stress of wondering what to wear. But, when I did work in an office, many many years ago. I also had selected pieces, mainly blouses and skirts. I so glad I don’t have to worry about what to wear, I think this article will be a great help for those that struggle with selecting their outfits for work
Hey Jamila, thank you for your perspective on comfortable office clothes. I am so with you concerning the ironing! All the best, Drea
Well a very big thank you to You Drea, these are great tips. Like you mentioned been comfortable is the primary thing, Ironing almost daily is really stressful, I go to help my Sister in her house All the time, she needs to really start considering materials when shopping, I would forward this article to her
Hi, thank you for commenting on my post! If your sister spends a considerable amount of time ironing, maybe it would help her get some items in different kinds of materials that are “iron-free.” Also, I find that a lot can be done by how laundry is put on the line. If you smoothen out any wrinkles straight out of the washer, it really helps to avoid ironing all together. This might sound lazy, but I do have a busy mom or working mom in mind, who is on her feet all day anyway, and I hope my post helps professional women to save a bit of time and make their lives a bit easier! I hope your sister finds the post valuable; thank you so much!
These are all great tips. I have quite a minimalistic wardrobe and think twice or more before buying anything new because it’s so much easier when you have everything in colors that match and you don’t have to spend hours deciding what to wear every morning.
Knowing your color type makes it much easier too. I found out that warm shades don’t suit me so I only buy cool shades. Black and white are the colors you find in my wardrobe most, then cool shades of violet/purple and turquoise.
I love easy-to-maintain materials that don’t need ironing. But I don’t iron even clothes that would need ironing, I just put them on the line neatly so that they are even when they are drying and that’s it.lol
Hi Lenka, thank you for your insight! It seems that you have streamlined your wardrobe to a large extent and are enjoying the benefits of it! I am on the same page as you – especially when it comes to office clothes. A well-coordinated office wardrobe that was put together with your color-type in mind really does make a difference to your stress levels, and the time you spend getting ready every morning.
